45 People, Including 17 Children, Killed in 3 Attacks

Three Israeli attacks that damaged Gaza schools housing displaced people caused numerous civilian casualties in violation of the laws of war, Human Rights Watch said today.

Critical shortage of funds further hampers efforts to keep children learning

Almost 30 million children are out of school in emergency or conflict affected countries - approximately half of all children out of school worldwide. Schools have been targeted and millions of displaced children have been forced from their homes and studies.

The UN Security Council should support specific actions to address the widespread incidence of targeted attacks on education and military use of schools in wartime. In particular, the Council should call on Member States to support and implement the Lucens Guidelines.

Armed men torched a private school in the Dasht area of Turbat, a western district of Balochistan, late Monday night. The men also set an estimated 150 textbooks on fire before escaping. This is the first-ever attack on a private school in Turbat. Earlier, schools had been targeted in Panjgur.

In these final 500 days, we should turn our attention to tackling two major issues that would help millions of children into primary education: child marriage and education in conflict situations.

The events that are unfolding in Iraq continue to put children at risk and have led to increased grave violations committed by all parties to the conflict.
